Poker Terminology

Essential terms for every player.

Blinds Forced bets: Small Blind (½ big blind) and Big Blind (1 unit).
Flop First 3 community cards.
Turn 4th community card.
River 5th and final community card.
Showdown Final reveal of hands to determine the winner.
Muck To fold without showing your cards.
All-in Betting all your chips in one move.
Position Your seat relative to the button; late position is advantageous.
Kicker Tie-breaking card. If players share a pair, the higher kicker wins.
Nuts The best possible hand at that moment.
Outs Cards that will improve your hand to likely win.
Pot Total chips wagered in a hand.
Rake Commission taken by the house from each pot.
Stack Total chips a player has in front of them.
Fish A weak or inexperienced player.
Shark A skilled, aggressive player who preys on weaker opponents.
Tilt Emotional state causing poor decision-making.
Fold To discard your hand and forfeit the pot.
Call To match the current bet.
Raise To increase the current bet.
Check To pass action without betting (when no bet is present).
